‘Shootout at Wadala’ Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey
Starring :- John Abraham, Kangna Ranaut, Anil Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Manoj Bajpai, Sonu Sood, Ronit Roy, Mahesh Manjrekar &Jackie Shroff,
Director:- Sanjay Gupta
‘Shootout at Wadala’ is a bang–bang, glamourized,
non-documentary, full of item numbers depiction of the story of a little known Don
of the Mumbai underworld ‘Manya Surve’ in true Sanjay Gupta style. His filming
is stylish and his characters speak taali
maru dialogues. ( Read: Milaap Zaveri has mastery over them. His earlier
work includes dialogues for ‘Once upon a time in Mumbai’ &‘Dirty Picture’. He
will very soon land in the league of the great Mr. Kader Khan). The film also explores
the sensitive side of Manya where he is transformed from a distinction getting
student to a criminal.
John Abraham probably gives one of the best acting
performance of his career, apart from looking awesomely tough. He brings the
kind of vulnerability required in Manya’s character. Kangana Ranaut is wasted
and has nothing much to do except giving some explicit love making scenes. Both Laila
and Babali is badmaash as crowd pullers. And are like shining
spots and act like eye catchers. The story line is predictable with a familiar
style of narration by the protagonist in flash back. The subplots of the fights between rival gangs
(Manoj Bajpayee and Sonu Sood) elbows its way out in the story.
Veteran Anil Kapoor easily sleepwalks his way in
the film. The action in the film has little emotion mixed in it. SAW also answers a question, “ Does the film glamourizes
the criminal’s” the answer is yes and no. Yes, because they are being served to
larger than life loving audience in Bollywood and No, because it delicately
balances out the outcome of the crooks in the end and tries to tell why a
baddie becomes what he is.
All in all, this is a weekend biryani with a heavy
dose of masala in it…!!!
