Ghanchakkar Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey

Starring :- Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan, Rajesh Sharma, Namit Das

Director:- Rajumar Gupta

What if Jason Bourne was not flamboyant, tough like rock, agile like snake, and smart like a fox? Will he be a Ghanchakkar? Who loves his wine (loves to forget it!) and wife (big boisterous fashion loving punjaban played with ease by Vidya balan- high time for her to shed some kilos!), who is a complete idiot sitting hours in-front of box (Read TV,) this Ghanckakkar (a refreshing change of guards for Hashmi who pours tons of vulnerability in the role) has a mastery in breaking big locks of any big tijori.

That’s where trouble (or should I say opportunity) comes knocking his door when Pandit (Rajesh Sharma in his cunning best) and Idlis (Namit Das in his underwear best) recruit him as a team member to rob a bank.

The threesome rob a bank wearing masks (must congratulate the director for one of the most incredible funny scene without using dialogues in Indian cinema!) the money is looted and Sanju    (Hasshmi) is asked to keep it safe…..dhantanan…..

Three months after; the duo of Pandit and Idlis return to take their portion of the loot, but hey who are you? I don’t know you? Asks Sanju. He even forgets where has he kept the money!

What follows then is humor and suspense filled story checking whether Sanju has really lost his memory or is he double crossing the gang. In the end the director chooses to take the ghanchakkar way to finish up thinks and one is left guessing.( it was little disapointing!) The dialogues of the film are funny, crisp and echo the common lingo. Music is just below average (may be it didn’t had any scope in this forget me not comedy flick!) Screenplay is tight and keeps you bind.

Emraan does his role with full earnestly (and kisses!). Director Raj Kumar Gupta (his previous ‘Aamir’ &No one killed Jessica’) once again proves that a good script is winner with or without the stars.

All in all a light breezer for the weekend !

Raanjhanaa Movie Review...

Raanjhanaa’- Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey

Starring :- Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub

Director:- Anand L Rai

Ranjhana is an unusual love story. It treads the uphill path of being captivated in love and downhill path of abhorrence in love. Devoid of any big star power this film solely depends on its screenplay, performances and music. Set in the colorful Banaras (beautifully cinematographed) loveable Kundan (played brilliantly by national award winner Tamil actor Dhanush) is madly in love with more affluent and ‘well educated’ Zoya ( Sonam Kapoor at her chulbuli and intense best) he loves her slaps, her gaalis but he doesn’t know as he grows up when his teenage infatuation becomes his deewanapan in which he is ready to hurt himself to hurt her. Enter the charming and dashing JNU leader Akram (Abhay Deol) who loves Zoya (and she loves her back too!) So a love triangle is set….but hang on there a twist in the offering!

The story takes a complete U-turn and from a feel good romance it becomes a romantic film set up in the corridors of politics in Sansad and JNU.  That’s where the film slightly loses the grip on audience not on the intensity quotient but on the lighter and funnier quotient (which is very well stitched in first half by smart one liners referring to UPism and Banarasism by writer Himanshu Sharma and delivered well by support cast Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub)

Couple of dialogues and scenes are sarcasm at it best “ hum banaras ke pandit hai aise hi logo ko dara dara ke itne saal se apna kaam chala rahe hai’ or a scene where an intellectual discussion happens between the JNU activists on why a person becomes ‘chor’ while the ‘chor’ sleeps patiently beside them J!

AR Rahman’s music has a soft feel to it and will take time (as always) to get on the minds of masses. Swara Bhaskar as Bindiya is kind of wasted she doesn’t have much to do. Director Anand L Rai (his previous ‘Tanu weds Manu’) does a good job in narration, casting and scripting. It will not be a big hit as it lacks the punchs ( or shud I say the taali maru and seeti marru moments) it does have couple of sensitive moments and is bound to impress the thinking audience J !

Score Stack Up:-

+ ive:-  Good Music, good story and brilliant performances.

-  ive:-  slight low on comic offering and lacks the stickiness factor.

Box Office, Paisa Vasool Rating:- 3.7 out of 5

Man of Steel- Movie review by Tanmay Dubey

Starring: - Henry Cavil, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner

Director:- Zack Snyder

What does 'being Super Man' ideologically stand for- “finding a super inside you, pushing to the limits, helping the ones who are in need and  in the process fighting the Evil.’  Zack Snyder’s latest man of steel offers you every things and much more than that!

Planet Krypton in a faraway galaxy is getting ended, as the inhabitants have used the planet’s core. Scientist Zor-El’s (Russell Crowe) wife gives birth to their son Kal-El who is the key to Krypton’s survival (this is revealed later in the film). General Zod (Micheal Shannon) is a non-believer in Zor-El’s ways and after an altercation and a little fighting (Avatar type creatures flying) he kills Zor-EI. Before his death Zor-El successfully manages to launch a spacecraft carrying their newborn son to a similar planet- Our Earth.

And then begins the story of how baby Kal-El becomes Clark Kent and then SUPERMAN.  Henry Cevill playing the lead emerges for the first time in screen bare body all drenched up in flames (this scene warns about the raw power and brutal action the audience will witness later in the film!)

The film intelligently throws light on the conflict inside the all-powerful Clark Kent (the child, the adult) { a distinct Christofer Nolan signature evident in Batman series too} who believes in his father’s word (played very well by Kevin Costner) on hiding his powers till the right time comes.

Well the right time comes when General Zod returns to earth searching him, Kent has to choose between humans and fellow Kryptonians and he discovers a Superman in himself and does what he is best at. Save the world!

There is one thing you seriously look up to in a superman film and that is action! And boy what stupendous action scenes! Really, a super human effort from VFX creators. The narrative is in bits and pieces directing everything to the climax which like a balloon offers you a huge volume of everything in action, hand to hand combat, buildings crunching, machines clanking and what not!

Henry Cavill as Super Man is too good (watch out for a single scene while wearing the cape where he smiles!) he has worked out a perfect body for the role.

All in all a perfect steel punch for the family this weekend….

YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA 2’ Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey

Starring :- Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Neha Sharma, Kristina Akheeva & Annu Kapoor

Director:- Sangeeth Sivan

The Deols are back with YMD2 ! but does it have the bang…….well not really. While YPD was about Deolism, Sardarism and a feel good comedy about lovable characters; this one desperately tries to be one. Dharam (Dharmendra) and Gajodhar (Bobby) are back in Banaras and doing what they do best- con people. Paramveer (Sunny) true to his name is a not a superhero but a ‘super-sardar’ and is earning his living in an honest manner. Twist of events lands Dharam and Gajodhar in London and then begins a twisted tale of confusion, con, love triangle and what not.  In the end after a supposedly funny roller coaster ride film ends with a song !

What am I writing does it make sense!

This is what exactly you feel when you watch over the top comedy scenes in the film. Director Santosh Sivan tries to fit in every formula, gags referring to Salman Khan’s film, Deol’s films, Shahrukh Khan, Deols’ dancing style, a super intelligent monkey who can make world class painting and a make love to a dancing sheela ! I mean bandaria, Sunny Deol fighting a thousand samurai and if that was not enough he screams his way out to the gundas and kicks the butt of gigantic sumo wrestlers. Dharmendra desperately tries to save guard the otherwise wayward script and Anu Kapoors one liners are the only saving grace. Sunny and Bobby are now veterans and they give a performance which is expected from them. The two beautiful bimbos (Neha Sharma & Christina Akheeva) are for name sake while Neha gets two dancing numbers, Christina could only be a back bencher!

Anupam Kher and Jhonny lever are wasted in their loud avatar. Santosh Sivan’s earlier hindi comedy attempts were ‘Kya Kool hai hum’ and ‘Apna Sapna money money’ which relied heavily on slap stick comedy, but in an attempt to make a clean comedy he sadly nosedives. Except for couple of jokes and songs like the title track ‘Sadi daaru ka tu pani…… & Mai to aida hi nachna’ the film yelps for water in this summer.

All in all hum bhi agar bachche hote naam hamara hota yamla pagla aur dewana to duniya kahti what a fun film! But kids depend on their parents to bring them to theater.  J

Score Stack Up:-

+ ive:-  Three Doel, Comic sequences which children would enjoy couple of jokes.

-  ive:- . Not funny enough!
