Mickey Virus’- Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey

Starring: - Manish Paul, Elli Abram, Manish Choudhary, Varun Badola, Puja Gupta, Nitish Pandey

Director:- Saurabh Varma

So guys, welcome to the world of ‘these’ young hackers, who ‘google’ a pickup line, ‘download’ a joke, their nick names are ‘Floppy’, ‘Virus’ & ‘Pancho’, Where the characters and setup are ‘comicaturic’ ( dhaye, zing, blam!) the latest sci-fi comic thriller is all about this.

Personally for me I was looking forward to watch debutant Manish Paul’s (jhalak dikh la ja- fame) and Elli Abram’s (Big Boss fame) first film with a cheeky title. And I am decently satisfied with the new comers’ efforts.

The film is about new age Hackers, cybercrime and murder mystery. Mickey Arora aka Virus is a Hacker but he is also a slacker. ACP Siddhant Chauhan (Manish Chaudhary) hire him to crack a gang involved in cybercrime, but when the table turns 180 degree Mickey finds himself swathed as a murder accused and robber. He cracks the mystery the way he hacks a website and all ends well.

Film is a great concept but in search of a plot. It is full of good funny one liner in typical Delhi-Haryanavi lingo picture this " Aaj Kal ki Generation bhi ajeeb hai, kapade khule rakhti hai par phone lock rakhti hai" Or " Mai kya Universal Charger hoon jo kanhi bhi Ghused Doge"

Manish Paul is very good as laid back Delhi Youngster, he easily slips in the character (much like the real life person he is). Elli Abram looks beautiful but the length of her role is small. Manish Chaudhary as tough cop is good (he is a pro in such efforts), but one person rise above the rest of the crew in performance is Varun Badola. His act as inspector Devender bhalla is superlative. He is a tremendous actor and one feel sad the way he is wasted in the industry. Hopefully he gets good roles in the future.

The film despite having a great concept lacks in production values and execution. The love story between leading pair lacks intensity and the film takes time to reach the main plot. After building up a good suspense and twist the director falls short of ideas and ways to show the unraveling of suspense.

Nothing to take away from the director Saurabh Varma kudos to him for bringing forth a brave concept and daring to do something other than regular masala offering at the Box office. The music too is a bit of a letdown. Will this do a ‘hatya’ for Manish Paul? Only time will tell. Watch this film for its light hearted thrill content.

All in all a decent road side Hakka noodle!

Gravity’- Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey

Starring: - Sandra Bullock, George Clooney

Director:- Alfonso Cuaron

So guys, the ingredients that make a good film are a good star cast, a great screenplay, a fantastic plot (with an elusive message!), breathtaking cinematography, startling sound recording and superlative performance that draws you inside the world that the cinema creates for you for that little time inside the movie hall where you cry, laugh, feel happy and feared along with the main protagonist.

The latest sci-fi thriller and space drama ‘Gravity’ my friends do all that for you!

It’s a superlative piece of cinema, which tells you the story of a lone bio-medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone who is a mission specialist on her first space shuttle mission to Hubble space telescope gets lost in the vast space and her struggle to come back to earth and be alive.

Sandra Bullock gives a tremendous performance, the sheer physicality she puts in while essaying the role leaves you panting after her during the entire run of the film.

The film is metamorphic in many ways,

-The vast space represents the big panorama of life where living and dying are two facets of life, completely unattached to the emotions and social credentials of people.

-Bullock’s fight for survival is akin to our journey in life facing all odds and coming out victorious from them.

-Clooney’s ‘special appearance’ in the end reminds us of our motivational prowess that we carry inside us and never quite realize it.

- The scene where Bullock listens to a dog barking and baby crying emphasizes the small joys of being alive; we often sleep over them in our own ‘busy lives’.

The Production values of the film are par excellence, the special effects and camera movement makes you feel you are travelling in the space. This just shows the length (and money!) that the western filmmakers go to make their vision come alive. (I at times envy that…C’Mon Mr Khan there’s whole world other than travelling in Chennai express!) Don’t be surprised if this one rings some bells at the Academy this year!

All in all a great supper for a festive weekend !

BESHARAM’- Movie Review

Starring :- Ranbir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Pallavi Sarda, Neetu Singh,

Director:- Abhinav Singh Kashyap

So, the Kapoor clan is out to do what they know best, Entertain! Ranbir teams up with Dad Rishi and Mom Neetu to give  the audience an action comedy which is full of tried and tested formulae over time in Bollywood with a story line of a anaath chor, a childless couple, a crunchy romance and a villain who gets kicked at the end in lots of gravity defying stunts! (thanks to cables!)

Babli is a shameless(who do not wink before showing off his bummies), parentless car mechanic and a part time car thief with a noble heart, he falls in love with Tara Sharma ( Pallavi Sarda who looks beautiful, confident and dances unlike her character in the film). Inspector and Sub Inspector (Husband and Wife) Chulbul Chautala(Rishi Kapoor) Abhinav Singh Kashyap was looking for some luck when he used the title of his first film again! and Bulbul Chautala ( Neetu Singh in a loud but lovable character) are a childless Police couple who incidentally is on a lookout for Babli chor. The twist in the tale brings Babli to realize his errors and he sets out to correct them and in the process find his love and parents!

The film more than Ranbir Kapoor, is important for the director Abhinav Singh Kashyap as he has to prove his mettle minus Salman Khan post super success of ‘Dabangg’.

‘Dabangg’ was never a great film. It had interesting characters, good songs and action scenes and a very formula backed action revenge drama story line. ‘Besharam’ too falls into same category as its high point like ‘Dabangg’ is the central character who is Besharam, bears an unusual name 'babli' like 'chulbul' in 'Dabangg'; who do wrongdoing for a cause (anaath bacche in this case) and has a heart of gold. Minus off course Salman Khan, but that’s not a letdown at all as Ranbir Kapoor who is in super form, single handedly drives the film on his performance be it comic, action, romance or dance.

Sadly such films, whose plot is wafer thin, rely a lot on good music which is a let down here. Dialogues are good and funny with decent cinematography (except in couple of close up shots during a song where pallavi sarda’s makeup shines in the sun light!) Climax is funny and passable.

Javed Jaferi hasn’t much to do in the film, except for some glaring eyes; the dance number at the end during the credit rollout is good watch with the kapoor clan dancing and singing.

The film may not rake the moolah like Ranveer’s last YJHD, but will end up for sure bringing smiles to your faces.

Its Masala time for the extended weekend
