EK thi   DAAYAN’ Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey

Starring :-  Emraan Hashmi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kalki Koechin, Huma Qureshi

Director:- Kannan Iyer

A witch’s Power lies in her braid (Choti ), and a Devil’s power in his neck, what if the two powers lock horns ? As a result you get a film which is as tightly woven as a Witch’s braid and screenplay as strong as a Devil’s neck. The movie watching experience then becomes like a juggler’s walk in a tight rope.

Bobo (Hashmi) is a famed magician (Shooting most of the performances in ‘Kingdom of Dreams’ Read: Gurgaon…but shot as Mumbai in the film), the ghosts (quite literally) of his troubled past returns and he fights to find the truth behind them. The movie thankfully does not uses the clichés of ‘kill bhoot with the help of God’ stuff and scores over other films of the same genre by its unique concept, nice music, and tight thriller like execution. (Kudos to the Director for that !)

All the lead actors perform very well. Emraan Hashmi convinces you with his vulnerable expressions,(he is increasingly becoming the poster boy of Indian Horror films) Huma Qureshi is very beautiful , I am sure if she sheds couple of kilos from the right places her screen presence will get enhanced multifold. She is quite shabbily dressed in the film devouring the audience of any chance to see any extra flesh, despite her covered up sex appeal she gets a chance to kiss Hashmi ! Konkana is simply brilliant. Her eyes act more than her voice in this film. The child actors too are good.

The horror quotient in this film comes more from sudden shocks than ugly faces. Vishaal Bhardwaj apart being the co-producer of the film has written Dialogues and Music for the film which are very good considering this being a horror film. Songs like Yaaram and Tote ud gaye has a distinct Vishaal Bhardwaj- Gulzar's sweet touch. Debutant Director Kannan Iyer does an impressive job putting up this film. His earlier works include assisting Shekhar Kapoor in ‘Bandit Queen’. A word of appreciation for Ekta Kapoor, who has an eye and an ear for such smart scripts. No wonder Balaji is one of the top (money making) production houses in Indian Film Industry.

The climax is little over the top, and the suspense has some loose ends but that’s what cinematic liberty is all about. Isn’t it ?

Score Stack Up:-

+ ive:-  Good Horror, suspense and thrill with nice music and good dialogues.

-  ive:-  not recommended for children !

Nautanki Sala’ Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey

Starring :Ayushmann Khurrana, Kunaal Roy Kapoor, Pooja Salvi, Avlyn Sharma

Director:- Rohan Sippy

In Nautanki Saala, (Reportedly based on a French film) Director Ramesh Sippy brings a twisted tale of friendship –love and Hate of Ram Parmar aka R.P.  (khuranna) who plays Raavan on stage but has Ram in his heart and name. He fell in love with his ready to die friend’s (Kapoor's) girl and what begins is a story which at times tries hard to be funny and at times tries hard to touch the romantic chords of the audience. This desperate attempt looks like gharr-gharr of an old vehicle standing in cold for a long time; which stops with a jerk more than it starts, every time the Driver ( Read: Director) tries to start it.

The average performance by all the once again proves the point that great performance can make average screenplay movie become great but sadly it’s the vice versa with this film. Ayushmann Khurrana has a long way to go as an actor and Kunal Roy kapoor is beoming a sick character actor !. The leading ladies also fails to inspire in their acting ( except for long kissing scene with Ayushmann). Two lovely romantic tracks ( Mera Mann…& Tainu Hukka) fails to lift the spirit of the film. So gaya ye janha is nicely pictured, almost singing all the way to Mumbai-Pune highway and no dhak dhak karne laga only in Background!

Like a French wine the film is little bitter, less sweet and can taste good to only few people.  Sadly if it had little heart  little madness this could have been so much better

Score Stack Up:-

+ ive:-  Good Music and Average Screenplay.

-  ive:-  Might impress only a section of audience.

CHASME BADOORMovie Review- Tanmay Dubey

’Har Ek Friend Kamina Hota hai’   is the tag line of the film and veteran Director David Dhawan sticks to the kaminapan  of the friends while telling the story which is full of really funny dialogues ( read: Divyendu Sharma’s cheap shayaris). Being the remake it did not had the luxury of having too many funny situations yet Dhawan manages to make a descent remake of the original cult classic and packages the movie with its original madness intact minus simplicity plus the age old Dhawanism brand of comedy. He pays homage to the classic “ chamko” scene in a truly innovative way ( Kudos for that!).

The sub plot of Rishi Kapoor’s character is cute. He is increasingly becoming most sought after character artist now a days and he does proves what a phenomenal actor (and Dancer) he still is! He builds up every character that he approaches with a perfect get up (read Rauf Lala in ‘Agneepath’ and his forthcoming ‘Aurangzeb where he plays a cop)

Music of the film is just average except for the song dhichkyaon doom dhoom which is foot tapping. (Sajid-Wajid stores their best for Salman! ) Performance wise all the young actors do a very decent job. Siddharth’s character does looks little over the top when the film starts but then gradually settles down. Divyendu sharma is as spontaneous as his last film ‘pyaar ka panchnama’. Ali Zafar does a decent job with his Punjabi accent Hindi !.(Girls love his voice…even in Dialogues! ) and dances well too. Debutant Actress Taapsee Pannu is good ( her girl next door looks J ) but has a long way to go in case she has to avoid becoming one film wonder.

David Dhawan’s style of comedy is quite evident (Read: film songs playing in a background in most of the funny situations, remember his ‘Aankhen’? ) paying at times tribute to his own films. Songs keep bursting out of nowhere which slows the pace and rest of the cast pulls of  the other comic scenes with Anupam Kher being his funny best.

All in All, this film is an entertaining which is going to fill your weekend with smiles. Like glue Dhawan has kept intact all the rawness of the young cast not allowing them much to go haywire. As I always say, do not compare remakes with their respective original classic if one wants to enjoy them. Every Film should be appreciated or loathed basis its merit or demerit.

Enjoy the Kaminapan !
