‘Raanjhanaa’-
Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey
Starring :- Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub
Director:- Anand L Rai
Ranjhana
is an unusual love story. It treads the uphill path of being captivated in love
and downhill path of abhorrence in love. Devoid of any big star power this film
solely depends on its screenplay, performances and music. Set in the colorful
Banaras (beautifully cinematographed) loveable Kundan (played brilliantly by
national award winner Tamil actor Dhanush) is madly in love with more affluent
and ‘well educated’ Zoya ( Sonam Kapoor at her chulbuli and intense best) he loves her slaps, her gaalis but he doesn’t know as he grows
up when his teenage infatuation becomes his deewanapan
in which he is ready to hurt himself to hurt her. Enter the charming and
dashing JNU leader Akram (Abhay Deol) who loves Zoya (and she loves her back
too!) So a love triangle is set….but hang on there a twist
in the offering!
The
story takes a complete U-turn and from a feel good romance it becomes a romantic
film set up in the corridors of politics in Sansad
and JNU. That’s where the film slightly loses
the grip on audience not on the intensity quotient but on the lighter and
funnier quotient (which is very well stitched in first half by smart one liners
referring to UPism and Banarasism by writer Himanshu Sharma and delivered
well by support cast Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub)
Couple
of dialogues and scenes are sarcasm at it best “ hum banaras ke pandit hai aise hi logo ko dara dara ke itne saal se
apna kaam chala rahe hai’ or a scene where an intellectual discussion
happens between the JNU activists on why a person becomes ‘chor’ while the ‘chor’
sleeps patiently beside them J!
AR Rahman’s music has a
soft feel to it and will take time (as always) to get on the minds of masses. Swara
Bhaskar as Bindiya is kind of wasted she doesn’t have much to do. Director
Anand L Rai (his previous ‘Tanu weds
Manu’) does a good job in narration, casting and scripting. It will not be a
big hit as it lacks the punchs ( or shud I say the taali maru and seeti marru moments) it does have couple of
sensitive moments and is bound to impress the thinking audience J !
