gooliyan ki raasleela Raam Leela’- Movie Review- Tanmay Dubey

Starring: - Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Richa Chaddha, Supriya Pathak

Director:- Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is like a painter who fills every inch of the screen with color, his finesse of picture making combine storytelling with heart stirring music and coupled with good performances. The cinema that he presents has its own class.

‘Goliyon ki Rasleela- Ramleela’ is loosely based on Shakespeare’s tragic tale of love ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The makers have nicely adapted the original settings into two underworld rival families of Gujarat, where the lovebirds fall in love, but the twist in tale pitch the lovers on different battleground where their love is tested against their dharma or duty. This type of offering is not new to the Indian audience right from ‘Qayamat se…’till ‘Ishaqzaade’ we have seen number of love stories being made in this setup.

The good part of the film is the electrifying chemistry between Ranveer Singh (his bronzed and chiseled look is to die for) and Deepika Padukone (passionate couple never leaves a chance to steal a Zealous kiss!) Gigantic and beautiful sets, some good lighting effects and a haunting background score with winning performances from Supriya Pathak, Richa Chaddha and Obviously the lead pair.

The sad part of the film is that it is little scratchy where the execution of a brilliant scene is screeched by an awful song (Bhansali ji, you may have a good ear for music, but your skills as a music director is far off from a full time music director) the absence of a full time music director and some soulful music is deeply regretted in the film. The music is again patchy except, tattad tattad, & nagada sang which reminds you of dhol baaje from “hum dil….sanam” is good, rest of them are just about OK. (Don’t miss the appalling item dance song from Priyanka Chopra)  Bhansali ji your sensitivity while portraying emotional story is to die for, masala offering is certainly not your piece of pie.

The film has lot of blood, gore and good drama.  The plot in the second half becomes little complex and runs towards the end leaving little room for  details yet Bhansali’s experience in film making keeps you rooted to the seat and you wait till the end.

All in all a teekha mirchi achaar for this weekend!
